Andrews Architects provided their expertise to design an 8,430 square feet ambulatory surgical center (ASC) for Trillium Surgery, a cardiovascular group. The ASC is on the second floor of a multi-tenant medical office building located in Gahanna, Ohio.
The suite consists of two operating rooms with a ceiling mounted C-Arm in one of them, three pre-op bays, three recovery bays, a nurse station, gross decontamination, sterile processing, and staff support spaces. The layout includes a staff connection to the neighboring OBL. All of the staff support spaces, such as offices and the breakroom, are placed along the exterior to take advantage of all the natural light.
Having an ASC on the second floor provided additional challenges. Besides the typical fire separation between the ASC and other tenants on the same floor, additional fire separation was required for the floor system between the first and second floor. Andrews Architects worked hand in hand with the core and shell architect to achieve the rating and a cohesive feel of the building. For all of the ceiling mounted equipment, additional structural detailing was required to limit the movement within the roof system. Finally, Andrews Architects designed the ASC to meet the standards and requirements of the Ohio Department of Health and QUAD A certification.
Like the neighboring Vive OBL practice, a similar palette was used to reinforce the connectivity of the two spaces. A hospitality feel was achieved primarily in the reception and lobby/waiting. The large wall of windows in the waiting area also allows natural light and nature to flow into the space. The darker flooring contrasting with the lighter wall colors help ground the spaces. The somewhat minimalist finish palette continues into the surgery spaces providing simplicity and uniformity.
